Hazel Aden:
Hazel is portrayed as Paige’s sidekick in season 1. She is a member of the spirit squad and is very rarely seen not alongside Paige.
Season 2
Hazel makes her first appearance in season 2 by attempting to hide her true heritage. She pretends to be of a Jamaican background when in reality she comes from a Muslim family. She hassles a fellow student, Fareeza, who happens to come from the same background as she does. When Fareeza’s project is vandalized, Hazel is left to relive her experience at her last school, where she was harassed following the September 11th attacks. Once Hazel makes peace with Fareeza, she gives a presentation where she reveals her true background. This season Hazel also manages to show the extent of her friendship with Paige. When Hazel learns of Paige’s rape, she is enraged but helps Paige to overcome her feelings. Finally, we learn of Hazel’s interest in Marco this season. The love interest proves to be anything but worthwhile as Marco chooses to fulfill Ellie’s crush rather than Hazels.
Season 3
With Marco single again, Hazel tries to spark some interest in him. She, Marco, Spinner and Paige go out on a double date. When Ellie spots Marco on the date, she flashes him dirty looks for attempting to deceive Hazel about his homosexuality, which only she and Marco know about. Marco storms away from the date and Hazel is left confused until she learns the true circumstances of his departure. Aside from issues with Marco, Hazel attempts to help Terri this season. When she learns that Rick is physically abusing her, she takes the initiative to ask Terri about it. Terri reacts by calling Hazel jealous. They both, however, rekindle their friendship once Terri decides to dump Rick. Hazel finally finds love while spending a Saturday in detention with Jimmy, Toby, Ellie, and Sean. While ditching detention, she finds herself with Jimmy kissing on the roof of Degrassi. Thus, Hazel’s relationship is born.
Season 4
It becomes apparent in season 4 that Hazel is against Rick returning to Degrassi. When Spinner, Jay, and Alex choose to pull a childish prank on Rick, Jimmy, Hazel’s new boyfriend, is left to deal with the consequences. Hazel, being the good girlfriend she is, helps Jimmy get through his recovery. In season 4 we also see Hazel’s departure from her original character. She begins to stand-up to Paige after he continues her incessant and merit less complaining.
Season 5
Hazel begins to feel as if both her and Jimmy are drifting apart. Ellie and Jimmy begin to spend more time with one another prompting Hazel to grow increasingly distant. When Jimmy is finally allotted the opportunity to paint a mural, he chooses to draw Ellie, and thus ends his relationship with Hazel in a stroke of the paintbrush. Jimmy is not the only character which Hazel begins to despise this season. When Paige begins to hang out with Alex, Hazel is anything but happy. As tension gets to an all time high, Hazel gets into cappuccino fight with Paige and Alex. They end up laughing it off while sitting in the security office. Hazel finally ends her year at Degrassi this season. We are not informed of her future ventures, but it is assumed that she is heading off to college.
