Degrassi: The Next Generation

Jimmy Brooks:

Season 1

Jimmy is Ashley Kerwin’s boyfriend at the start of season 1. Ashley begins to lose interest in him and plans to end their relationship. Before being able to do so, she irresponsibly consumes ecstasy and hooks up with Sean Cameron at a party. This leaves Jimmy bitter and causes him to abruptly end their relationship. Jimmy himself also faces problems with drug abuse in season 1. He begins to take Ritalin initially prescribed for Spinner with hopes of improving his game out on the basketball courts. This proves to be disastrous as his aggressive behavior ends up getting him cut from the team.

Season 2

In season 2, Jimmy makes a pledge with Spinner to always tell the truth. This encourages both to be highly-critical of one another, and ultimately of their peers. Jimmy’s newly found honesty ends up first offending then assisting Ashley in pursuing her poetic talents. This season also sees Jimmy’s attempt to rekindle his relationship with Ashley. His attempt is however unsuccessful as he is unable to let go of the past and allow Ashley to express herself as she wishes. Jimmy’s wealth comes into play this season when it begins to spark jealousy within Spinner. This jealousy drives Spinner to steal some of Jimmy’s personal belongings and sell them. The conflict between them is not resolved until the start of season 3.

Season 3

Jimmy shows his tolerant side this season when he is exposed to details regarding Marco’s sexual orientation. Jimmy chooses to accept Marco’s homosexuality and scolds Spinner for his intolerance. Jimmy also consoles Marco when he becomes the victim of a hate crime. In “Take On Me,” Jimmy also develops an attraction to Hazel while sitting in detention.

Season 4

When Rick returns to Degrassi, Jimmy proceeds to bully him. This bullying ceases once Jimmy and Rick are placed on an academic team and begin to befriend each other. When the team is required to perform on a game show, Rick becomes subject to a prank arranged by Jay, Alex, and Spinner. Enraged, Rick retreats to his house where he takes possession of a firearm. Rick then brings the firearm to Degrassi, where after interacting with Paige he goes to freshen up in the restroom. While in the bathroom, Rick overhears a staged conversation between Jay and Spinner that places blame on Jimmy for the prank. Rick then proceeds to find and shoot Jimmy, and later himself following a struggle for control over the firearm with Sean. When Jimmy returns to school paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair, he discovers that he was framed by Spinner and subsequently disowns Spinner as a friend.

Season 5

In season 5, Jimmy attempts to return to sports with his new disability. Ellie, however, encourages him to seek entertainment elsewhere: in the arts. As Jimmy begins to spend more and more time with Ellie, Hazel, who is still his girlfriend, becomes increasingly aware and enraged. This leads her to sever ties with Jimmy. After the end of his relationship with Hazel, Ashley encourages Jimmy to reveal his feelings to Ellie. This turns out to be disastrous as Ellie reveals she does not share the same feelings for Jimmy. Before the close of the season, Jimmy reunites with Spinner and begins to once again develop an attraction for Ashley Kerwin. It is unfortunately revealed that Jimmy must remain at Degrassi one more year as a result of his previous years’ absence.

Season 6

When Ashley arrives from England, we find that chemistry continues to exist between both her and Jimmy. Despite Jimmy’s new sexual obstacles, Ashley assures him that she still wants to be with him.

Season 7

Jimmy unintentionally competes with Ashley this season when she attempts to rekindle her love for music. When Jimmy discovers Ashley’s self-fish attempt to sabotage his dreams to solely pursue hers, he decides he wants to end their relationship. Jimmy also helps Spinner this season by insisting that he consult a doctor on account of his abdominal pains. These pains turn out to be testicular cancer.
