Degrassi: The Next Generation

Degrassi: TNG Season 3 DVD Review

by DJ Primeaux and thedonoman

The packaging of this season's box set follows the same format as the last two. The cardboard slip-cover is red and has a great cast picture of Manny, Craig, Ashley, Emma, Chris, Paige, and Spinner. There are three discs, each held in thin plastic cases. The first disc features Marco, Dylan, Snake, Emma, Baby Jack, and Spike on the cover. The second displays Craig, Manny, and Ashley amidst all their love-triangle glory. The third offers Ellie, Sean, Terri, and Rick. Along the inside covers, you can read full episode descriptions to help when choosing an episode to view. Be weary however of the description of 322 "Power Of Love," as it tells of a plot in which Ellie boycotts Marco's "bollywood" themed party (which FYI, never happened!). Also included is a small poster featuring many of the cast members. While it's mostly for show, it can be hung vertical or horizontal depending on your wall space.

Like all Degrassi DVDs, this season is filled with great extras, just like the box says: "Bursting with Extra Features!" For starters, there is an absolutely crazy amount of deleted scenes. The majority on the set come from "Father Figure" and "Holiday", but most every episode has at least one or two. Some of the best moments include when Spinner suggests naming the band "Ask Liberty Van Zandt." Why? So everyone asks her...free publicity! Also, we get a glimpse into a principal on principal love affair that never was, between Mr. Raditch and Ms. Hatzilakos.

Other features on the DVD include Cast and Character Bio's, which are nice if you don't already know the cast so well you could have written them yourself. Also included is a karaoke section, where you can sing along to a few of season 3's biggest songs. In essence, it's very lame. But it's nice to have the songs on hand if you want to listen to them quick. The disc's also feature a "Yearbook" sporting many of the promo pic's from the season, and a "Fan Quiz" made up of 20 relatively easy questions about the show.

The best features on the set include the CTV promo's for Accidents Will Happen, and episode commentaries from "Pride" and "Accidents Will Happen." Pride features Aaron Martin (Executive Story Editor), James Hurst (Story Editor), Shane Kippel (Spinner) and Adamo Ruggiero (Marco). In a hilarious fashion the four guys talk all things Pride, including the crappy weather on the day of the beach shooting, Shane's "butt modeling" career that wasn't and Marco's female body double. Accidents Will Happen features James Hurst, Shelley Scarrow (Story Editor), Cassie Steele (Manny) and left off the credits Nicole Demerse (Staff Writer). Topics of convo range from the front walk-over from hell, Manny's "abortion" run and a shout out to all the avid downloaders in America. Oh, and something about "baby weenis."

All in all, this DVD set delivers the goods. American fans finally have a high quality version of Accidents Will Happen and the other 20 episodes at their fingertips for hours of viewing pleasure. Plus, the deleted scenes and commentaries are great supplements to the full episodes.

We'd like to again thank FUNimation for making such a great DVD and for donating so many DVD's to our contest last spring. Personally, we think the format for the Degrassi box sets are great. The third season's is the best so far and we can't wait for season 4!
